Our Reason to Exist

Mission

Inner-City Action Network (ICAN) is a community-based, peer-led, culturally relevant behavioral health not-for-profit dedicated to restoring hope, strengthening families, and transforming the lives of youth, fathers, and community members impacted by trauma, violence, homelessness, and systemic inequities.

We advance a healing-centered, relationship-driven model that uplifts the voices and lived experiences of Black, Brown, and marginalized communities through:

  • Father-focused restorative mentoring and leadership development rooted in the I.C.A.N. principles of Healthy Fathering (Involvement, Consistency, Accountability, and Nurturing).
  • Restorative youth and adult peer mentoring promotes dignity, belonging, and emotional well-being.
  • Power group culture and healing circles that build resilience, disrupt cycles of violence, and strengthen identity.
  • Violence prevention, domestic violence intervention, and substance use disorder (SUD) education that empower individuals and families with tools for safety, recovery, and long-term stability.
  • Unhoused advocacy and food insecurity support provide compassionate crisis response, family strengthening, and pathways to community reintegration.

Through mentorship, culturally responsive behavioral health support, and community mobilization, ICAN supports the cultivation of safe, thriving communities where every youth, father, and family can heal, lead, and succeed.

Vision Statement

ICAN envisions vibrant, healed, and resilient communities where youth, fathers, and families have equitable access to the resources, relationships, and opportunities needed to thrive.

We strive for a future where:

  • Fathers are empowered as anchors of healing, connection, and stability in their families and communities.
  • Youth and adults experience restorative pathways—not punitive systems—when facing trauma, conflict, or crisis.
  • Culturally rooted, healing-centered care is the standard, not the exception.
  • Peer mentorship and community leadership drive meaningful change and collective accountability.
  • Violence is prevented through relationships, not enforcement, and communities are equipped to transform harm in ways that uphold dignity and safety.
  • Families experiencing homelessness, food insecurity, SUD, or domestic violence receive holistic support that leads to restoration, reconnection, and sustainable wellness.
  • Community power is built from within, ensuring that those most impacted by systemic barriers lead the solutions that reshape their futures.

ICAN’s vision is a world where inner-city communities thrive through collective healing, strong fathers, empowered youth, resilient and sustained community transformation.
